Why No Reservations?
“The best way to know yourself is to know others.” – Philippa Georgiou
When it comes to options of how one could spend their time beyond the confines of work and responsibilities, the possibilities are endless and very entertaining. The same can be said for the options of where one should go to church or what faith community one can join. These options are endless in our ever-shrinking world and overly connected world. So what makes No Reservations different from the church/faith community down the street.
Well, for one, the diversity of beliefs and practices of churches in the Miami-Dade area are diverse and, at times, extremely toxic. So one needs to understand the realities that just because they claim to be a Christian church doesn’t necessarily make them a welcoming place for all people. In fact, all one needs to do is go to their website and look at the “What We Believe” section to gauge the type of Christian community that is being lived out in the four-walls of those buildings.
On the other hand, there are churches/faith communities who are genuinely living out their commitments to follow the One that became Christ and to become living communities of love and acceptance. In this site, you will find a list of our partner churches that we believe are committed to the call of Christ to love your neighbor as yourself and the call to be the living hands and feet of the One whose very definition means love. (1 John 4: 8)
So why No Reservations? Well, we are not claiming to be a church, nor do we want to be tied down to anyone denomination or faith expression. Instead, we wish to be a group that reflects the best of our partner denominations and faith communities. A group that adds to them, while at the same time, creating a safe space for those who do not fit in any of the available options that exist today. We are the “other” option when it comes to faith, where one can come and explore their questions without any expectations of membership or commitments to any particular way of being Christian.
We are a community of seekers and misfits, of rebels and social justice warriors, and of people who need time to heal and to simply “be still” so that they can once again feel the love and the pull from the Universe itself. We are a community that does not claim to own anyone theological perspective, nor do we claim to own truth with a capital “T.” We simply open our doors to all who see the realities of our world, who feel the disconnectedness of our humanity and feel the calling in their hearts to imagine the world as it should be, and a human potential that has spiritually evolved out of the self-destructive loops of our human nature.
We are a group of reformers and of people who feel the prophetic wisdom that connects us to 3000 years of human history. And above all, we are a group that wishes to work with our community and faith partners as conduits for faith-exploration, social justice engagement, and moments for intersectional relationships between people of all backgrounds and faith stances. So I welcome you all to give us a chance, and bring your questions, frustrations, hurts, pain, joy, and talents, so that together, we can reflect the true nature of Christ, reflected at the core of our Authentic Selves.
